Hollywood stars Jane Fonda and Robert Redford never thought they‘d get the chance to play an onscreen couple again. After all… he’s 81 and she’ll turn 80 in December. It’s been nearly 40 years since their last onscreen romance in The Electric Horseman, and hopes of getting together one last time had long faded. But then ‘Our Souls At Night’ was brought to Robert Redford’s attention. The new film, which debuts tonight on Netflix, is based on Kent Haruf’s novel about two elderly neighbours seeking companionship late in their lives. When Robert read the book, he couldn’t see anyone but Jane Fonda starring alongside him. Both of their characters are facing the realities of getting older, and all the emotional baggage that comes with it. They have partners who have passed away, and their own self doubts linger, but they are still looking for a human connection. ‘Our Souls at Night’ opens with Jane’s character asking Robert Redford if he’d like to sleep with her. She means it literally. Soon afterward, they wind up in bed together, just talking and reflecting on their lives. It’s not about the sex, though that topic does eventually come up. Check out this great teaser clip from Netflix, that traces their onscreen history and sets up the new movie.
