By day, UCLA assistant researcher Melanie Barboni is an expert on volcanic eruptions, but she’s also known for a subject that has nothing to do with geology or volcanoes: hummingbirds… those tiny crazy-fast wing-flapping, darting, squeaking birds. Would you believe a colony of 200-plus hummingbirds have made their home around the campus office where she works… and she knows many of them by name! of the Melanie has been called the “hummingbird whisperer,” by her friends and colleagues.
Every weekday, she greets her small flock of “fairy” birds to her office window with nectar she mixes from large bags of sugar and water. The sight is mesmerizing with a frenzy of fluttering and flashes of iridescent greens, blues, reds and purples. If she puts her hand on the rim of a feeder, they will perch there and If she doesn’t feed them in a timely manner, they will start to yell at her.
