The Carpenters were one of the biggest-selling group’s of the 70s. No fewer than ten of their singles went on to become million-sellers, and by 2005 combined worldwide sales of albums and singles well exceeded 100 million. Between 1970 and 1984 brother and sister Richard and Karen Carpenter had 17 top 20 hits, including “Goodbye to Love”, “Yesterday Once More”, “(They Long to Be) Close to You” “Rainy Days and Mondays” and “We’ve Only Just Begun”.
Before the Carpenters recorded their version of “We’ve Only Just Begun,” it was essentially just a 60 second commercial jingle, for Crocker National Bank in California. It was written for a wedding-themed TV ad, sung by one of the co-writers, Paul Williams. Richard Carpenter saw the ad and heard the potential, and contacted Paul, asking him if there was a complete song? ‘Well, funny you should ask,’ was Paul’s reply.
