Tony Bennett’s chart-topping career spans seven decades. His interpretations of great American standards have put him in the history books and now he’s being honoured by The Library of Congress with this year’s Gershwin Prize for popular song. The lifetime achievement award, named for the duo of George & Ira Gershwin was created by Congress to honour singers and songwriters who entertain, inform and inspire. On hearing the news, Tony recalled that one of his earliest recordings was ‘Fascinating Rhythm’, a song by the Gershwin’s. Past recipients of the prize include Paul McCartney, Carole King, Paul Simon, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder. Tony Bennett is scheduled to accept his award in Washington in November.
