Special Focus On Cycling Safety and Red Light Running In July

Well the nicer weather is here – finally! The month of July will see police forces in Ottawa and Gatineau focusing on cycling safety and red light running.  Between 2011 and 2015, there were 1518 collisions involving cyclists,  resulting in 1225 injuries and 10 fatalities. As far as red light running goes, there were 3196 collisions resulting in 1432 injuries and two fatalities. This was between 2011 and 2015.

Ottawa residents have identified traffic safety as a top priority. The Safer Roads Ottawa Program is committed to using available resources to make Ottawa roads safer for residents. The Safer Roads Ottawa Program is a partnership between Ottawa Fire Services, Ottawa Paramedic Service, Ottawa Police Service, Ottawa Public Health and the Transportation Services Department committed to preventing or eliminating road deaths and serious injuries. Also participating in the Safer Roads Ottawa Program are the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Sureté du Québec, Department of National Defence’s Military Police and Gatineau Police Service.
