There is a neat solo exhibition called Silent Cities at the Trinity gallery, Shenkman Arts on now til the 18th.
The show has paintings and relief sculptures made from toys and costume jewellery. The paintings feature artistic distortions of numerous buildings in and around Ottawa.
The works use whimsy and hallucinations to explore ecological concerns, with animals and nature placed in unusual juxtapositions with the built environment. Large animals appear on skyscrapers built on the ruins of their forest, cats sprout golden flowers instead of smoke, wings want to fly.
The artist behind this exhibition is Sanjay Sundram who is an architect by training. Originally from New Delhi, India and just recently settled in Ottawa.
He describes his show as such, “as I try to understand a different set of structures, I find that ideas of flight and that of change, feature in the works.”
