All of the attention the Toronto Raptors are getting these days as they via for the NBA Championship against the Golden State Warriors, is also drawing attention to the the Eastern Ontario town of Almonte, the birthplace of Dr. James Naismith – the inventor of the game of Basketball.
This excerpt from a January 31st, 1939, broadcast of the radio program “We the People” hosted in New York by Gabriel Heatter is believed to be the only known audio recording of Dr. James Naismith. In the roughly three-minute clip, Dr. James Naismith, who had traveled to New York for a basketball doubleheader at Madison Square Garden, discusses setting up the first basketball game with two peach baskets in a gymnasium at the International YMCA Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts in December 1891.
By the way, the town of Almonte will be staging it’s own version of Jurassic Park this coming Friday for Game 4 of the NBA Finals Almonte at the Old Town Hall, near Bridge Street. Follow the FaceBook events page for details: https://www.facebook.com/events/297888517832388/permalink/299115974376309/
