“We’re gonna do it!
Give us any chance, we’ll take it.
Give us any rule, we’ll break it.
We’re gonna make our dreams come true.
Doin’ it our way.
Nothin’s gonna turn us back now,
Straight ahead and on the track now.
We’re gonna make our dreams come true,
Doin’ it our way.
There is nothing we won’t try,
Never heard the word impossible.
This time there’s no stopping us.
We’re gonna do it.”
Those lyrics meant the world to me growing up, I knew them by heart and I wanted to live them. Because two of the most independent role models of their day Laverne and Shirley lived by them. I hung on to any strong female back in the day as I didn’t have the greatest strong role model in my own Mom and my Dad being my Mom, well he wasn’t a girl so I looked where I could.
Laverne and Shirley were on my list. Shirley was cool dating Carmine but Laverne was the cooler one to me, single but fiercely independent while being wacky and living life….sure it was a TV show but I thought it epitomized what I wanted to be. Strong, single, independent and maybe a bit wacky.
Of course the real Laverne was all of those things too, and then some. Penny Marshall may have started off as wacky Laverne on the small screen but she quickly moved to following in her late brother Garry Marshall’s footsteps in directing.
Her directing debut was Jumpin’ Jack Flash which lead to many more films including a few Tom Hanks movies, Big and A League Of Their Own.
Tom had this to say about his friend’s passing yesterday, ” Goodbye, Penny. Man, did we laugh a lot! Wish we still could. Love you. Hanx.”
Penny Marshall died Monday night at the age of 75 from complications cue to diabetes. She now joins her brother Gary in comedy heaven.
RIP Penny aka Laverne…..thank you for just being you!!! It meant the world to me. Still does.
