Tony Harris is a celebrated Ottawa artist. He’s just completed a monumental task – painting the portraits of the NHL’s 100 all-time greatest players. He started painting last November after the NHL approached him with the idea of painting one large canvas with all of its greatest players to mark the 100th anniversary of the league. Tony was concerned that such a large scale format would favour some players over others, so he proposed 100 small portraits instead. The NHL agreed. Tony completed his epic NHL commission last month when he put the finishing touches on a portrait of all-time scoring leader Wayne Gretzky.
Tony Harris’s work was well known in hockey circles. His portrait of the late Roger Neilson, a longtime coach and hockey innovator, is featured in many league offices. All of his paintings will be on display at the Aberdeen Pavilion later this month during the outdoor game festivities as the Ottawa Senators play the Montreal Canadiens at Lansdowne Park on December 16th.
