Is it time for hair salons to stop charging different prices for men’s and women’s haircuts? A downtown Ottawa hair salon has taken that bold step and will soon be charging their clients based on how much work their hairstyle involves. ‘Hair Junkie’ on Laurier Avenue decided it was time to join the growing trend of hair salons in Canada and the States offering “gender-neutral” haircut pricing. The new pricing structure will start in September, when a barber-style cut or a short pixie cut will start at $31. A “mid-to-long” cut or a drastic style change will begin at $46. There will also be a middle price for haircuts that are less complicated and fall between those two extremes.
Jessie Stevens is the salon coordinator, and as far as she knows, Hair Junkie is the first Ottawa salon to go with gender-neutral prices. They did their homework, gauging what other salons across North America were doing and charging, coming up with a price structure that she feels is fair and competitive. What are your thoughts?
