Ottawa Firefighters Will Administer Drug For Opioid Overdoses

By the end of June, Ottawa’s fifteen hundred firefighters will be carrying Naloxone kits. Ottawa’s fire chief says training will begin next week, and with the focus initially will be on firefighters working in the downtown core. Many firefighters were reportedly frustrated, watching the spike in opioid overdoses and deaths and not being able to administer a potentially life-saving treatment.  For example, earlier this year, firefighters were first on the scene when a Kanata teen died of an overdose. The firefighters will be using a nasal spray to administer Naloxone, different from the injection which is used by local paramedics. (local files)
