Ottawa Fire Services firefighters will visit homes throughout the city between September 10th and 17th to ensure that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are present and in working condition. Visits will take place between 6 and 8 PM on weekdays and between 2 and 4 PM on weekends. Firefighters will be in uniform and residents are not obligated to let them in. This is a courtesy call only.
The Ontario Fire Code requires homes to have a working smoke alarm on each floor and outside each sleeping area. Carbon monoxide alarms are required outside sleeping areas if the home has an attached garage or a fuel-fired appliance.
This is the second of two eight-day campaigns OFS has planned for 2018 as part of its annual ‘Wake Up! Get a Working Smoke Alarm’ campaign. Homeowners who don’t have working smoke alarms may have one installed for them, or be provided with new batteries, or information on how to acquire one.
Only selected areas of the City will be visited. If no one is home when OFS comes calling, fire safety information will be left in the mailbox. For more information visit ottawa.ca.
