Netflix Users Have Spoken, With A Thumbs Up

Netflix has announced that they have plans to replace user star ratings with a simple thumbs ups & thumbs down rating system – maybe as a nod to Gene Siskel & Roger Ebert? A Netflix VP made the announcement yesterday. Apparently, the company had tested the new thumbs up & down ratings on a large sample group of users in 2016, and the result of the testing was impressive. The thumbs got 200% more ratings than the traditional star-rating system. One thing you may not have realized is the star rating you see next to un-watched content is not how Netflix users rated that show or movie, but the rating Netflix believes you would have given that content, based on users who have similar entertainment tastes as you. It’s an algorithm. That means it’s entirely possible for the same movie to display two different ratings for two different accounts.
