The National Gallery Of Canada Is Kicking Off Christmas

Christmas kicks off tonight in style with the lighting of the giant Christmas tree, music, crafts, treats and so much more all taking place at the National Gallery Of Canada.

You and your family are invited to help the National Gallery of Canada light its giant spruce measuring more than 11 metres high and almost 8 metres wide, as its decorated with hundreds of ornaments and some 10,000 lights.

Several events are leading up to the tree lighting including a performance by the Stellae Borealis violin ensemble and the making of tree ornaments. Children can also ride VIA RAIL’s Christmas Mini Train on the Plaza outside the Gallery and warm up with hot chocolate and a holiday treat inside. Festivities get underway at 5 pm and the tree lighting takes place at 6:30. The fun continues until 8 pm.  The Boutique will also be open until 8 pm and today only, members will benefit from a special 25% discount on purchases. Admission is free.

If you can’t make it out, the tree, will sparkle in the Scotiabank Great Hall every evening until January 7, 2018 and you’re invited to take selfies in front of the giant spruce tree and share them via the hash-tag #NGCTree.

The Gallery will be open throughout the holidays except for December 25 and January 1, and will offer hands-on art activities for the whole family from Saturday, December 23 to Sunday, January 7.
