One of the supporting stars in the T-V series “Magnum P.I.” has died. John Hillerman played the straight-laced Jonathan Higgins to Tom Selleck’s lead character in the popular 1980s T-V series. Hillerman was 84, and reports say he had been in declining health before he died at his home in Houston.
Alongside co-stars Roger E. Mosely and Larry Manetti, Selleck and Hillerman continued their characters’ back-and-forth shenanigans through the series’ entire eight-year, 158-episode run. Premiering in December of 1980, Magnum P.I. was an out-of-the-box hit. Hillerman earned four consecutive Emmy nominations for the role from 1984-87, finally winning the last time. He also won a Golden Globe on his first nomination for the role in 1982.
After Magnum ended in 1988, Hillerman appeared in the 1989 miniseries Around the World in 80 Days and recurred on sitcom Valerie. His final credit was the 1996 feature A Very Brady Sequel. (The Canadian Press, deadline.com)
