Impressive Art Installation Celebrates Peace And Canadian Unity

Very cool art installation along Sussex Drive, near Rideau Falls. It’s called ‘Compass’, and it’s made up of 3800 hand made ceramic sculptures, arranged in the shape of the compass rose logo of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society who operate an information pavilion nearby.

The sculptures, consisting of feathers, roses and fleurs-de-lys are meant to represent the three main groups of people here at the time of Confederation; the indigenous peoples, the British peoples and the French peoples. There are also 195 ceramic birds, symbolic of the countries of the world today.

The Ottawa Guild of Potters helped to create the ceramic pieces used in the installation. Well worth seeing if you happen to be in the neighbourhood! ‘Compass’ will be on display until September 30th.
