Hundreds Of Clay Turtles Are Popping Up In Vanier!

Christopher Griffin is a local artist, renowned for his imaginative sculptures of primarily animal motifs. Christopher is also the ‘Artist in Residence’ in Vanier for 2018. For his most recent project, he chose a turtle theme and he had a lot of help! Below is his explanation…

I have chosen the turtle as the motif for my artist in residence for Vanier. Both Montreal Road and Beechwood Ave. begin at the Rideau River, prime turtle habitat. The turtle carries its home on its back and is a good metaphor for the homeless issues confronting this community. It is also an important symbol for the local Indigenous peoples. Finally it is a creature everyone can recognize and everyone can create out of clay. Over 2000 small clay turtles have been installed all over Montreal Rd. and Beechwood Ave. in Ottawa.
