I have known Tom Cochrane off and on for many years and the man never ceases to amaze me. I first interviewed him when I was sixteen years old and just starting out in radio. Many years later, I sat down for another chat and his first words to me were, “Wow nice to see you’re still in radio after all these years.”
That’s right, the guy remembered!! He’s been like that ever since with my favorite moment being at the Canadian Music Week many years ago when he was getting on an elevator with some friends. I happened to pass him and say, “Hi Tom.”
He said to his friends, “excuse me, hold the elevator.” He then got off the elevator and said, “Codi, how are you? Are you having a good weekend?”
Not only does he impress me in that way but his shows continue to blow me away beyond belief….he is just that good!
But now, I have no words for this wonderful man, he just continues to up the ante as he has reworked the lyrics to his already amazing song Big League to honor the Humboldt Broncos.
Appearing on TSN last night to help kick off the networks NHL playoff preview special, Cochrane played an acoustic version of this song in front of a green and yellow backdrop and as he sang, photos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team playing were displayed in a montage.
Cochrane updated the lyrics to say they were “riding to immortality” and placed an emphasis on the unpredictability of life.
Many Canadians have associated the song with the 15 people who were killed last week’s highway collision between the HumboldtBroncos’ bus and a truck in Saskatchewan.
