Have You Seen This Plant?

Local conservation experts are waging war on a new enemy.  It’s a plant known as Japanese knotweed, an aggressive invasive plant species which has taken root in more than a dozen places along the Ottawa region’s shorelines.  If it’s not controlled, there’s concern the plan will spread, displacing wildlife and crowing out native plant species in may area.  Japanese knotweed is strong enough to break through walls and roads.  The semi-perennial plant, native to Eastern Asia, was introduced to North American in the 1800’s as an ornamental species.  The weed has since spread across much of Canada and the United States.  It was first identified in Ottawa about four years ago.
