The one good thing about this year’s winter weather is how good it was to our Rideau Canal Skateway. Past years have seen it almost too cold to skate out there or worse case scenario, too mild and it closes early, even during Winterlude when we want it open for tourists.
However as the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end but what a great ending.
After a wonderful skating season, the Rideau Canal Skateway is now officially closed for the season. The current and forecasted weather conditions are negatively impacting the ice on the Rideau Canal Skateway and are not conducive to repairing it any further this season.
The NCC urges the public to keep personal safety in mind and to remain off the Skateway now that it is closed. Please respect the red flags, barricades and signs installed at access points. NCC staff and contractors will be working over the next few days to dismantle the equipment and infrastructure used in Skateway operations.
The skating season lasted 71 days, making it the longest season in more than 13 years and a record 1.4 million people visited the Rideau Canal Skateway by yesterday’s closing date, surpassing the previous record for 1.3 million visitors in 2000-2001.
