A world champion Indigenous Canadian runner is being honoured and remembered with a Google Doodle today, on the anniversary of his birth in 1887. The graphic features Tom Longboat of Ontario’s Grand River First Nation running in one of the Google logo’s “Os” alongside a maple leaf in the second “O.”
Among many of Tom’s accomplishments, was winning the Boston Marathon in 1907, and setting a new course record of 2:24:24. Tom Longboat retired from running at the age of 29 to fight for Canada during World War I, during which he was twice wounded. He died in 1949 at the age of 62.
