Gender Specific ‘Lady Doritos’ Causes A Stir On Social Media

If you follow social media closely, you might have seen “Lady Doritos” come up as a trending topic in the past couple of days. The idea went viral this week after PepsiCo’s executive officer Indra Nooyi made an appearance on a podcast called Freakonomics, and hinted that the product would be launched soon. She said women don’t like licking their fingers while eating the snack, pouring the crumbs into their mouth or munching loudly in public, like men do.

PepsiCo has since denied such a gender specific product is in the works. Some marketing experts are suggesting the CEO was ‘testing the water’ to see how consumers would react to such an offering.

The notion sparked a social media frenzy, meeting with criticism from the likes of Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, and model Chrissy Teigen, along with lengthy articles in publications like The Daily Beast. It doesn’t take much to set us off these days, and PepsiCo just scored a huge publicity coup!
