The Gatineau Park parkway network (Gatineau, Champlain, Fortune Lake and Philippe Lake parkways) has closing for the season. The National Capital Commission put the gates in place at 6 PM, on Friday. The early closure is a result of the special weather statement issued by Environment Canada, calling for a mix of snow, ice pellets and freezing rain to fall on the area over the weekend.
Gatineau Park doesn’t use salt or grit on the roadways as a measure to help protect the environmentally sensitive Park environment and vegetation, requiring the parkways to be closed prior to winter as a safety precaution. During the winter season, Gatineau Park Parkways become cross country ski trails. The parkways in Gatineau Park are expected to reopen on May 3rd, 2019, at noon.
To visit Gatineau Park, the Luskville Falls, Gatineau Park Visitor Centre, and the parking lots along Meech Lake Road and in Kingsmere will remain accessible. In fact, the grounds of the Mackenzie King Estate will remain open all winter (access via Barnes Road).
