When Kenny Rogers retires at the end of his current tour he will have sold more than 100 million records, is a member of the Country Hall of Fame and has more number one hits than any other country artists, quite a legacy.
His autobiography revealed a self-deprecating side that few who attain his success possess, and his farewell tour, The Gambler’s Last Deal, has shown that he has lost none of his ability to charm audiences with both the depth of his song catalogue and his onstage charisma.
DOWNCHILD BLUES BAND
Along with Ronnie Hawkins, Donnie Walsh—Downchild Blues Band co-founder—has mentored and led more musicians than any dozen other Canadian bandleaders. By Walsh’s reckoning, some 120 musicians have passed through the band’s ranks since he and his younger brother Richard formed Downchild in 1969.
In its prime—roughly 1973-82—Downchild had several hit recordings, managing to break out of the blues genre into the mainstream of Canadian rock. Downchild has continued to be a stalwart of the Canadian concert scene, and the popularity of the Blues Brothers films have elevated Donnie Walsh and his band to legendary status among blues fans.
Serena Ryder is one of Canada’s stars with a vast vocal range. She started singing in public at seven and began writing her own material at the age of eleven. She released her first independent CD in 1999. Radio exposure attracted the attention of singer Hawksley Workman, who signed her to his label. In 2008, Ryder won the JUNO Award for Best New Artist, and followed that the next year by winning the Adult Alternative Album category for the album Is It O.K.
In 2012, she scored her first U.S. hit with the single “Stompa,” which led to an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. In 2014, she performed O Canada to a massive television audience for the opening ceremonies of the NBA All-Star Game in Toronto, and co-hosted the JUNO Awards, where she won both Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year.
