Emergency Situation At CHEO

Visits to CHEO’s emergency room have reached “unprecedented levels” as the hospital struggles to cope with a sustained influx of flu patients. 7,200 patients were seen at CHEO in January and followed by another 7,000 in February. Hospital officials stress that almost half the visits to the ER involve conditions that could be safely treated by a family doctor or at a walk-in clinic. Children with minor ailments have waited up to eight hours to be treated, For guidelines about emergency room visits check out:http://www.cheo.on.ca/

Last week, the Queensway-Carleton Hospital declared a “Code Orange” — a rarely used protocol put in place when its 264 beds are filled and its surge capacity exhausted. Both the Ottawa Hospital and the Montfort have also seen a spike in the number of patients showing up at their emergency departments.  (local files)
