For most people north of the Rio Grande, the 5th of May is a day to scarf down Mexican food and quaff some margaritas. But what does Cinco de Mayo celebrate?
The holiday commemorates the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. In the battle, the Mexican army led by General Ignacio Zaragoza (read that one out loud) defeated French forces who outnumbered them 3 to 1. The David versus Goliath victory was a huge morale boost for the Mexican people.
That’s a good enough reason to have a margarita, isn’t it?
