She was the closest thing to TMZ before TMZ came along. Syndicated gossip columnist Liz Smith has died at the age of 94. For more than a quarter century, her column was one of the most widely-read celebrity-driven features in the world. Smith was able to score many scoops because of her own celebrity status, which prompted celebrities to tell her stuff other columnists could only glean from tipsters, press releases and publishers. Smith came to be known as “The Grand Dame of Dish”. During her career, she wrote columns for new York Daily News, The Washington Post and Cosmopolitan. Smith died of natural causes at her home in Manhattan.
