Teen Canadian tennis sensation, Bianca Andreescu, continued her phenomenal breakthrough season by delivering a one-sided defeat of two-time Grand Slam winner, Garbiñe Muguruza, to make the BNP Paribas Open semifinals on her debut appearance. The 6-0, 6-1 rout took just 52 minutes.
The result is the 18-year-old’s third and biggest semifinal of the season so far, following her breakthrough run to the Auckland final and appearance in the last four of Acapulco two weeks ago.
For Bianca, who began the year ranked World No.152, it also marks her fourth career Top 20 win – and second in a row following her defeat of No.18 seed Wang Qiang in the previous round – and extends her 2019 win-loss record to an incredible 26-3 (13-3 in WTA main draws). In Monday’s rankings, the teenager will be firmly inside the Top 40 in the world.
Bianca Andreescu will now face either No.6 seed Elina Svitolina or fellow teenager Marketa Vondrousova in the semifinals of the tournament in California. Meanwhile, fellow Canadian’s Milos Raonic and Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski are still in the hunt in their respective divisions. Denis Shapovalov was eliminated earlier today.
