Canadian Artist Kathryn Durst Is Illustrating Paul McCartney’s Children’s Book

Kathryn Durst is a graduate of Sheridan College in Oakville. She’s a native of Peterborough. With a background in animation, she has interned with Pixar Animation Studios in addition to working with various children’s book publishers. And now, she’s working with a legend – Paul McCartney. She’s in the process of illustrating ‘Hey Grandude!’, a book recently written by Paul McCartney.

Sir Paul selected Kathryn’s work based on samples he’d been given by her agent in England. She was up against about 10 other artists, and never imagined he’d pick her… but he did, although she had to wait about 6 months to find out! She started working on production soon after signing the deal and is about half way through the illustrations.

One thing Kathryn didn’t expect was to have much contact with Sir Paul. Typically, authors and illustrators don’t communicate directly. They speak through the publisher to iron out the details. But Paul McCartney insisted on talking to Kathryn. In fact, she was driving when she missed his call the first time. Doh! She immediately re-dialed the number and Paul McCartney answered. They spoke for about 25 minutes, talking about the book and influential books that Paul had read as a kid (Narnia and Treasure Island were two of his favourites).

Hey Grandude! is about a cool, intrepid-explorer grandfather who uses a magic compass to whisk his four grandkids off on adventures. McCartney has eight grandchildren who inspired the book. They even call him ‘grandude’. The 32-page book will comes out in September of 2019, but is available for pre-order online.
