Area police forces have launched their Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) for the month of June, with a special focus on cycling safety and construction zones. Between 2012 and 2016, there were 1,486 collisions involving cyclists with 1297 injuries and 12 fatalities. In Ottawa between 2012 and 2016, 956 collisions occurred in construction zones resulting in 205 injuries and 1 fatality.
The Safer Roads Ottawa Program is a leading community partnership between Ottawa Fire Services, Ottawa Paramedic Service, Ottawa Police Service, Ottawa Public Health and the Transportation Services Department committed to preventing or eliminating road deaths and serious injuries for all people in the City of Ottawa, through culture change, community engagement, and development of a sustainable safe transportation environment.
Also participating in the Safer Roads Ottawa Program are the RCMP, the OPP, Sureté du Québec, Gatineau Police Service and the Department of National Defence’s Military Police. (news release)
