Anti-apartheid Activist Winnie Mandella Has Died

Following a long illness, South African anti-apartheid activist Winnie Mandela has died at the age of 81.

She married former president Nelson Mandela in 1958, and although he was in prison for much of their marriage, the couple had two children together.

She was convicted of kidnapping and assault in 1991, and while the couple divorced in 1996, Winnie Mandela was still widely venerated in South Africa for her role in fighting white minority rule.

The family says she was known far and wide as the Mother Of The Nation.
