There’s talk of an ‘American Idol” reboot. The show premiered on Fox in June 2002 but was cancelled in April of 2016 because of faltering ratings. ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey called it a “pop culture staple that left the air too soon.” His network is currently in talks to bring back the popular singing competition format which produced stars like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson. There are still plenty of questions left unanswered, including who will be the host and who’ll make up the judges panel. ABC recently hired the show’s old host, Ryan Seacrest, to be Kelly Ripa’s new co-host on the daytime talk show Live. The show has also had a revolving door of judges including Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi, Ellen DeGeneres, Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. ABC is expected to formally announce the return of American Idol later this month. One person who cannot return to ‘American Idol’ is former judge Simon Cowell as he is locked into an exclusivity deal with NBC, which makes his ‘America’s Got Talent’ series. Season 1 winner Kelly Clarkson has been mentioned as a potential judge.
