Vinyl records, film cameras, flip phones… these things are all back in vogue again as a wave of nostalgia sweeps up millennial’s and other age groups. Now Tamagotchis, those 1990’s key chain virtual pets are making a comeback – partly by design. Tamagotchi’s became one of the biggest toy fads of the 1990s and early 2000s. To mark the gadget’s 20th anniversary, Japanese toy-maker Bandai has re-released the original six pets that launched the craze back in 1996. To everyone’s surprise, demand surpassed supply and they quickly sold out. There are some differences between the old and new Tamagotchi’s. The updated versions have received some design tweaks and are about half the size of the originals. Now for some bad news. Tamagotchi fans in Canada hoping to get their hands on one will have to wait, since the relaunch is currently exclusive to Japanese stores. If you can’t wait, you can try jumping the queue by purchasing one on Amazon Japan.
