The 66th Canadian Tulip Festival kicked off today. This year’s theme is ‘A World of Tulips.’ In keeping with the theme, keep an eye out for the “World Friendship” tulip. This tulip, a Triumph Group mid-season tulip, is a soft creamy yellow colour — the symbolic colour of friendship — strong-stemmed and highly resistant to disease. The World Friendship tulip was developed by Professor Marcel Lenard from France in 1988. The NCC will showcase 30,000 World Friendship tulips, 5,000 of which were gifted by the Canadian Tulip Festival and planted in Commissioners Park last fall for display this spring.
The Canadian Tulip Festival runs through Monday, May 21st, with special programming at the main sites; Lansdowne Park, Commissioners Park/Dows Lake, the Garden Promenade, and in the ByWard Market. Marquee events this weekend include the 3rd Annual Canadian Tulip Festival Swing Dance, Dance with Us Ottawa Tulip Soiree, a Mother’s Day Brunch for Bruyere, and more across the main sites. Some of the events are FREE!
